Jesca Hoop Back on the Road!

    Photograph courtesy of Jack Kirwin

Hello Good People! It has been a relatively quiet summer with most of my work happening at home. Home improvements and the final stages of a new record fill my cup as of late. I have been experimenting with weather control as I mix versions of my new record play through my studio speakers. I should apologise to Manchester for the hail we experienced in the middle of a hot summer’s day… too much high end on the vocal. Of course Manchester is not on a fault line… there was just a bit too much low end on that bass drum! Rumble!!!!! Yes, I’ve got some explaining to do. Then there is some work of a collaborative and secret nature that has my imagination stretching in search of edible melodies and evocative phrases. I look forward to the time when I can reveal this collaboration to you all, my dear listeners. So it is a divining rod pulling me here and there, rather than an aeroplane at the moment. But this insular mode can only last so long as the plane ticket is staring me in the face, and I must fly again…

At the end of this month, I will be joining Iron & Wine for the 5th Annual Midwives Benefit in Austin, Texas. The benefit directly benefits a foundation called Mercy in Action. To read more about it, please follow this link .

There are also a couple of Manchester events for my people in my home town!! Manchester Pride, which I am very much looking forward to. I believe the event is being performed only by women…which is fun for us gals, but not so much for the boys. So we will have a chance to bring the boys in with the Undressed Festival in August, which I am headlining on the second day.

Then we have a festival in Denmark – I love playing in Denmark!!

And look … more dates with Iron & Wine… this time around Europe, as well as a few stateside dates.
So go ahead, and have a gander. Follow the link to buy a ticket for a show near you!!

    Hello Good People!!

Here we are and it is summertime! The spring carried me through a whirlwind of touring across the United States, to the UK and through Europe. I joined Shearwater as 5th member of the band and tried my hand at a bit of keyboards and percussion, as well as adding dark, dramatic, low vocals underneath front-man Jonathan Meiburg’s sung poetry. For anyone who does not know them, Shearwater is a rock band so performing this music was a great change of pace for me! I was working double-time as I opened the shows myself as well. In a gap between Shearwater dates I did my own tour through the UK in support of my latest release, ‘Undress’. It was wonderful to sing for so many lovely faces. Thank you all for coming! I feel quite fortunate. So now I am back in a writing phase at home in Manchester as I have a new record in the pipeline! I recorded it over the New Year and it is in mixing stages now…. All new tunes… very exciting!

Until festival season I am home scaling the walls of my imagination, searching for new melodies and new ways to put things.

And so I thought I would send along the latest Hoop gossip. You know, bits of talk from my tours etc.

Enjoy the summer folks (as it begins to rain in my grey Manchester garden)!

    More to come,

    Ms Hoop x

    Hello good people!!

The sun is shining here in my Manchester home and all is well.
We are into the spring now, and I can tell we are all feeling the promise of more sunshine! My winter was the exact opposite of what winter is intended for … I had no time for hibernating, I was like the bear turned inside out!! So, what’s been happening? And what’s still to come?

I think I will continue to carry the torch for this dying art form… the love letter!

Undress Features Guy Garvey on Murder of Birds. Performance Footage Now Available Exclusively to Pledgers!

For those of you who don’t know that I am an American living in the UK… ‘tis true. I have been here 5+ years! One person was particularly instrumental in my choice to move to UK, and that would be Elbow frontman, Mr Guy Garvey. It was through our friendship that a whole new life unfolded for me in the United Kingdom. The song ‘Murder of Birds’, along with my first collaboration with Guy, were born there at the genesis of that new life. The original version was done through the wire across the sea. This time we enjoyed the luxury of being together to capture this renewed version. You can view and share in the experience by going to the Pledge website and supporting Undress.

Hoop Supporting Shearwater! Upcoming Tour Dates:

I haven’t played in a band for years. A month or so back Jonathan Meiburg, ring leader of Shearwater, asked me to open the shows for their West Coast tour and what’s more … to play in his band! Jonathan is a spectacular songwriter and overall musician. He is a great lyricist and I really look forward to singing and playing along with him as part of his band. This is bound to be an adventure! Also, Shearwater have put out a new record called Fellow Travellers covering songs by artists that they have toured with. Jonathan was sweet enough to use an excerpt from my song ‘Deeper Devastation’ from The House that Jack Built to open the record.

    Hello Good People !!

I am happy to announce that Undress now features artist extraordinare and dear friend one Mr Guy Garvey lead singer of Elbow on song Murder of Birds. Murder of Birds was the song that brought me to the UK and through Guy himself. I met Guy for the first time over the phone. He called to interview me for his radio show Guy Garvey’s finest hour on BBC 6music. I was in the bath when he called ;-) His interview was one of my favourites of all time and was just, well, a great conversation. We made steadfast friends. I was based in LA at that time working on a record and I asked Guy if he would sing on this song Murder of Birds. He agreed. I sent it to him through the wire. This long distance collaboration is what makes up the original version. For the recording of this new version.. we are sat together in a circle, in the living room, he and I and our friend Tom Goodwin, playing it all together. It was performed and captured in the simplest way possible. This recording is a lovely snapshot of a great friendship in a place where we share great fondness and admiration for each other and the power of music and poetry.

    All for you !!

Thank you dear pledgers.. I hope you enjoy it !

Hoop with Placebo and Willy Mason

Life has a way of surprising you. When I got a call from lead singer of Placebo, Brian Molko, to discuss dueting on their new single ‘Too Many Friends’, I must admit… I didn’t know who he was, nor did I know of the band Placebo! Well, I had heard ‘A Friend in Need’, but I couldn’t tell you where I had heard it, or who it was by. Regardless of my ignorance and having looked into them a bit I agreed, and with much curiosity, took the gig. I say “with curiosity” because, well, Placebo and I seem worlds apart and I couldn’t say with any confidence that I felt sure that the Placebo crowd would embrace me. You see, along with singing this tune with the boys, I was to open their shows in New York City and in Los Angeles. Fortunately, the extremely excited Placebo audiences were very gracious with me. I stayed side of stage to watch what now goes down as one of my favourite ever concerts. Not knowing any of their songs, but loving their musical expression and watching the boys spin the crowd in frenzy after frenzy. It is easy to see why there are Brian lookalikes in the crowd! He has that kind of magnetism. The Placebo show put me into an altered state… just what music should do. All this, and the boys are lovey, lovely people.

How did I get so lucky to have so much this month? If you don’t know Willy Mason.. you are missing out.
Willy reminds me of a young Johnny Cash. He has this strong, solid, deep voice. He is charmed and charming; a totally likeable person. He is out right now touring his new record ‘Carry On’, so check out one of his shows if you can. I was happy to lend a voice for his session at KCRW, linked below:

We had our first shows in Missoula and Salt Lake City, and what great fun they were! We are driving through the mountains now headed to Denver. All is well on the Hoop front.

    “Hello good people!
Happy October! Can you feel the wind picking up? I have been enjoying making lots of soup, and falling asleep to the blustery skies as the season shifts. Christ Almighty, it’s nearly Christmas … and there is still so much to do! So what adventures does October bring for the Hoopster? Well, first I am headed to New York City to play at C.M.J 2013. I love, love, LOVE playing in N.Y.C!(Details for these shows are listed below.)

Next, I hop over to Boston to play a show at the Berkelee College of music that will be filmed and Broadcast live by BIRNCore on the world wide web . Very exciting! Catch it from the comfort of your own living room! Details below.

Then, I head west to record a live, raw rendition of my sophomore album Hunting My Dress (I am going to be playing a show at Hotel Café while I’m there – see below). I have different sessions booked around the States with some brilliant artists to get my record done; exciting! For those of you who love Hunting My Dress, I hope you will enjoy these stripped back live versions… for that’s what it’s all about! I have named this record ‘Undress’. I will be releasing ‘Undress’ through Pledge Music, and shall reveal more as the project starts to congeal…

After the recording, I shall be jumping on the Iron and Wine bandwagon for a week of live shows! I am especially looking forward to returning to The Ryman Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee. Life is looking pretty good… If I ever complain, sock me!

At this very moment however, I am sat in my cosy Manchester home putting together a radio show for BBC 6Music as I will be standing in for Guy Garvey on his Sunday evening show “Guy Garvey’s Finest Hour”. The show will air this Sunday (October 6th) from 10pm to midnight!!

I am very much looking forward to the fall and my plate is overflowing with fun and interesting projects.

    Iron and Wine Tour Dates:

Every now and then our work rewards us with unexpected gifts. I couldn’t be happier to announce that I will be doing a string of dates with one of the loveliest songwriters working today; Samuel Beam, better known as Iron and Wine. These kinds of surprises are one of the many great gifts that come along with this work. I’ll be joining him from November 5th. Details of the shows are listed below.”

    Lost Ark Studio Session:

Through August I toured up the West Coast of California. I started in San Diego and while I was there I stopped in to record my song Hunting My Dress at Lost Ark Studio. These kind gentlemen have a great studio out there filled with pristine vintage gear… It’s a collector’s dream.
The album will be available here: http://www.soundcloud.com/lostarkstudio

    Hoop on the Radio/Womad Festival:

Womad was a summer highlight for me. It was a chance to experiment with a small stage set up in front of a large crowd. I had with me a singer and guitarist and that’s it. I wasn’t sure how that combo would go down at a big festival and on an outdoor stage. Much to my delight I was able to speak and sing to my audience in the intimate manner which I prefer. I did not raise my voice to speak… I spoke to the people in the very back as though they were sat right in front of me. This was a gift the audience gave to me with their undivided attention. Then afterward, a lovely 8 year old girl returned the favour and performed for me her fantastic hula-hooping skills. Watching this lovely little lady and the whimsical ukulele player that spontaneously provided the sound track was a charmed moment.
Here is an exclusive performance of ‘Born To’, recorded backstage for The Guardian at the festival: http://www.theguardian.com/music/video/2013/aug/02/jesca-hoop-born-to-video

The British Library has recorded some of the sets from the festival, and made them available for you to enjoy. These recordings can be found by visiting the library. More information can be found here: http://www.cadensa.bl.uk

    Hoop in a Box:

Well one of my favourite gigs on my West Coast tour was in Portland. And I owe a lot of credit to the folks at Sessions from the Box for helping me get the word out. I performed a batch of songs for them and they will be made available on my Facebook page on September 10th.

    Hoop on the Radio:

During my West Coast tour we diverted up to Fort Collins, CO. to play the E-Town radio show at The Lincoln Center. This show was recorded live in front of an audience and will be broadcast later this month, so please keep your ears to the ground as we will announce the airing date very soon!
Please visit http://www.etown.org for more information.

I also did a live interview with Facets of the Heart on 2nd September 2013. To listen to this interview, please visit http://FacetsoftheHeart.com

Hoop has returned from U.S. tour!

I ended my tour in Bryce Canyon in Southern Utah where I walked for 4 days amongst ancient monument rock formations. It was like I was under the sea in a coral reef as I walked this red and white chalk landscape, and it gave my mind total rest.

I am back under the silver skies of Manchester now. I’m back at the grindstone. Plans are coming together for the recording of my next full length record and all of the songs have been written. This is very exciting. Stay tuned! There are some other projects in the pipeline that I cannot yet reveal…early days. So much to do, so much to look forward to!

    Hoop Covers Channel:

One of the great rewards in sharing my music with the world is finding videos and recording of others doing cover versions of my songs. These are real treasures in my view and I take much delight in collecting them. No matter how the song is performed I find them all charming. I am touched by the sentiment and tickled at the gesture. So I have created a YouTube playlist dedicated to those lovely ones who have taken the time to learn and play my precocious little numbers. After all… they belong to you now.
If you have performed a cover and would like to see it on the YouTube covers playlist, please send your video links to musickeep@live.co.uk

    Dream Blog Update:

The latest Dream Blog instalment ‘AC/DC Dust Devil’ is now available on: http://www.youareinnocentwhenyoudream.blogspot.co.uk

That’s all from me for now. Remember to drink water …eat your greens… breathe deep and laugh… with absolutely everything!!

The albums will feature recordings from St. James’ Church in Dingle and the IMRO Other Room, as well as various acoustic sessions from unusual locations across Dingle. The final collections will also feature recordings from Wilton’s Music Hall in London and The Glassworks in Derry/Londonderry.

Other Voices Series 8 Volume 1 & 2 will be available on Deezer from August 2nd and will be available for purchase on iTunes from August 30th. Legendary music TV programme Other Voices has been recorded in Dingle each year for the past eleven years. Musicians and artists representing a myriad of musical styles, traditions and cultures travel from across the globe to take part in this unique collaboration. Recording intimate acoustic sessions and in-depth interviews in Dingle locations throughout the day, in the evening time artists take to a miniscule soundstage erected in the crumbling 200 year old St. James’ Church in the very heart of Dingle, to perform for a small audience of music fans. The recordings are then edited into TV packages, which are broadcast some months later on RTE Two and on television and digital platforms across the world.

The most recent series of Other Voices was a particularly unique event in the history of the programme, the show travelled beyond Dingle for this first time, creating additional music al gatherings in Derry/Londonderry and London over the course off many months.

Jesca Hoop at The Castle Hotel, Manchester:

Jesca recently played a fantastic sold-out show in Manchester at The Castle Hotel, Oldham Street.

Hoop at U.K. Festivals Womad and Cloudspotting:

Jesca played at the U.K. festivals Womad and Cloudpotting last weekend and she would like to share a few of her experiences with you all:
“Womad was absolutely magical. We were asked to play the closing set of the night on the Charlie Gillett Stage. It was really nice to play a festival set where there was no interference from other stages. My set was pretty sparse so it was nice to have the sonic space to fill up with our more or less gentle sounds. The crowd was brilliant and totally focused. It felt like an intimate gig … I felt connected to the audience, all the way to the back. I left the stage on a high! Afterwards, I was greeted by the members of the audience. A little girl named Sophia asked me if she could show me her hula-hooping skills. I was delighted. This girl who was maybe 7 years of age then gave me a hula-hooping performance of a lifetime!!! You go girl. Sophia… priceless!! “Cloudspotting was really sweet. It was nice to see the festival had grown since last year. As usual in Northern England the rain was ever-threatening. Just before my set the rain came pouring down. The Northerners can handle it, though!! Fortunately the band on the main stage at this time was perfect for the rain and had the crowd jumping around. Fire Under the Sea is their name. By the time it was my turn to play… the rain had stopped. Thank goodness, because people are more likely to cry during my sets than jump around. It would have been pretty sad to make people cry while they were standing there in the pouring rain.”

  • 3rd July 2013

    Hello friends,

June was a quiet month for me in the way that all of my activities were more or less confined to my writing room. There was, on the other hand, a flurry of motion happening there ! I have whittled 15 little universes so far for my new record !!! Hallelujah ! What satisfaction !! We will, naturally, have to wait to enjoy the sharing of this work until records have been made. It’s like waiting for Christmas !! I did manage to take a break from song-writing to do a couple of fundraisers in June. First, for MacMillans Cancer Support down in London, with opening act Slow Club. I played many new tunes and made many mistakes. Good fun ! Thanks to all who showed up !!

Next, I did a benefit show for the Miners Community Arts Centre in Manchester, where I joined radio DJ Stuart Maconie and Smiths drummer Mike Joyce to help raise funds to save the community centre.

In late June I enjoyed a change of pace and went to Belfast to play the Open House Festival. This was a really sweet festival, featuring all sorts of intimate bespoke shows around the city centre. The audience that attended my show were absolutely delightful, respectful and full of cheer !!

A little snippet of news… Other Voices:

A couple of months back I brought my band to Ireland to play the Other Voices festival in Derry, Londonderry. This is a must-play festival and the kind of event that really reminds me why I do what I do; to bring people together and celebrate life ! And what a celebration it was ! This event was televised around Ireland and now you can watch it here: http://www.rte.ie/player/gb/show/10160476/. Unfortunately, this is not available to view in the UK or Northern Ireland but the rest of you around the world… view away !!

    So, what’s coming up ?

I have a string of shows coming up !! Please take a look below and catch a show near you !!

4th July 2013 – Power’s bar, London. Supporting We Were Evergreen
    Tickets and info: http://www.jescahoop.com/tour

12th July 2013 – Band on the Wall, Manchester.Supporting Shuggie Otis I toured all around the United States with Shuggie Otis in the spring which was great fun, especially considering the contrast of the music. You may have figured out by now that I don’t really play funk music. If you don’t know Shuggie Otis…. He is an unsung funk-legend and hero. I am happy to be reuniting with them on my own stomping grounds here in Manchester. This is a great show to catch !!! Tickets and info: http://bandonthewall.org/events/3815/

25th July 2013 – The Castle Hotel, Manchester.
It’s been a little while since I have played with any of my Manchester mates and with some festivals coming up, I thought we would get back into the swing of things by playing a very small show at The Castle Hotel in Manchester. There is no better way to get ready for a show than to play a show !! Tickets and info: http://www.heymanchester.com/jesca-hoop-8

26th July 2013 – Womad Festival, Malmesbury. Womad is a wonderful festival shining a light on music from all over the map !! Check it out !! I am very excited to play this event and then to camp and enjoy the attractions !! Here is a little mention of me for the festival and more info on Womad.
    Tickets and info: http://womad.org/artists/jesca-hoop/

27th July 2013 – Cloudspotting Festival, Clitheroe This is also a really sweet festival that is set on a river and all of the locals come out ! Last time I played Cloudspotting it started raining during my set so I invited the entire crowd up on to the stage so they could sit under the canopy and stay dry. What a laugh that was !! It was one of my favourite festival moments in history !! Tickets and info: http://www.cloudspotting.org.uk/

    Dream Blog Update:

I have been dreaming like a little demon. I have posted one of my more vivid dreams of late here… warning…. It’s not all together pleasant… http://youareinnocentwhenyoudream.blogspot.co.uk/?zx=7454927d151cded1

    A bit more news:

    Mr Gig, by Nige Tassell:

I was interviewed in the North York Moors by a charming man, Nige Tassell, about live music for his book on the subject entitled Mr Gig.
It’s an insightful book about the live music industry. If you guys want to read more into it, it’s available in book stores and here: http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/nige+tassell/mr+gig/9426339

“_Mr Gig_ is a sweet and tender paean to a very particular lost love, the live gig, and a wise and witty account of how one man set about rekindling that youthful romance” – Stuart Maconie.

“_Mr Gig_ perfectly captures what it’s like to become a hopeless live music addict; the anticipation, the expense, the social ineptitude, the adrenalin and the utter, unexplainable elation of it all” – Steve Lamacq

”Written with enthusiasm and nostalgic curiosity… an affectionate celebration of live music in all its forms” James Fearnley, The Pogues

Thank you folks for all your support !! I mean that !! Thank you !! I hope you are enjoying your summer !! See you soon !

    The Macmillan Big Mix Weekend:
Jesca had a wonderful time performing at The Macmillan Big Mix Weekend last weekend and would like to pass on this message of thanks:
“Thank you to all who came to The Big Mix festival to show your support for McMillans Cancer Support. Lord knows those folks out there suffering from cancer need every bit of help they can get to get them through. I was very happy to help bring folks together to chip in toward this effort! You were a wonderful audience and soooo quiet too!!! Thanks folks!!”
